    History and Political Science, Essay

    Topic: INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS THEORY-
1)Does neo-realism or neo-liberalism provide the most credible account of international politics? Discuss with reference to the films ‘Lord of the Flies’ and ‘Independence Day’. Remember to include reference to the literature and empirical examples in your answer.

The bulk of your essay should be about the theory and the academic literature, not about the film.
Look at the sample essay which i will be attaching later on to get a good idea of what an excellent essay ‘looks like’.
Try to use the type of vocabulary used by key theorists when discussing the perspectives.
Clearly distinguish between different branches of the theoretical perspective (e.g. Don’t just refer to ‘realism’, but specify if you are referring to classical realism or neo-realism)
You are required to compare two different perspectives. . It is probably best to limit your analysis to one other rival perspective since this is all the essay title asks of you. You can incorporate reference to three alternative perspectives if you like but only if you are confident that you can do justice to the material in terms of space, focus and critical analysis.
IN REGARED TO THE ESSAY INTROUDUCTION you need a hypothesis as well. It is not enough to ‘arrive’ at this in the conclusion. It needs to be in the intro to so the reader is well aware of what you intend to argue.
Hypothesis = your answer to the essay question.
If you use a long quote, make sure the link with your preceding paragraph and subsequent paragraph is clear.
Don’t use too many quotes. Paraphrase as much as possible.
Some description is required in this essay to explain the key principles of a theory. But the main focus should be critical analysis (i.e. evaluation of strengths and weaknesses)
Your points should be explicit rather than implicit? (i.e. expressly stated, rather than implied)
Use evidence to support your argument: either literary (e.g. good academic sources) or empirical (e.g. an example from ‘real life’ politics)
