You are to write a policy memo to the government of Nation X. In this fictional country,
there have recently been political tensions and controversies within the civilian
government that have raised concerns of an impending coup d’état.
Read the attached news article and do two things:
1. Identify at least 3 current – or potentially – critical issues that may be cause for
concern in terms of a coup d’etat or increased praetorianism by the military. From
here, you must a) clearly describe why these are problematic for proper civ-mil
relations, and b) use the literature covered in the course to source why these issues
are problematic.
2. Take the 3 issues you have identified and outline how the civilian government can
overcome these challenges and head off any impending coup. Again, you must a)
clearly describe your prescriptions for these problems, and b) use the literature
covered in the course to source why these are effective solutions for the country’s
problems. Your prescriptions may also include highlighting positive trends in the
article and how they can be reinforced or improved to prevent praetorianism.
