Something to think about
When we think about the ‘effects of media violence’, we may try to make a link between people who
watch violent media (or participate in violent video games) and then go out to commit acts of violence. While it is true that people who
have committed extreme acts of violence (school shootings, for example) have been heavy users of media violence, it is also true that the
overwhelming majority ofpeople who consume media violence do not become perpetrators of
violence and may in fact lead peaceful lives. So,
you will need to read about the ‘subtle’ effects of consuming media violence and considerthese in your assignment.
Levels of
analysis
The term ‘levels of analysis’ indicates that there are different ways, or different levels, of understanding human behaviour.

To illustrate levels of analysis,
considerthe following statement on a completely different topic to media violence -happiness.
Positive interpersonal relationships are
linked to happiness. Having a sense of purpose and control over one’s life is also important. For some people optimism, which is also
related to happiness, is part oftheir makeup, their genetic inheritance, if you like (Eckersley, 2004).
Now read the last paragraph
carefully. You will see that in those few words, there were three ‘levels’ of explanation for happiness. First, there was a ‘social’
explanation (i.e. positive interpersonal relationships); then an ‘individual’ or psychological explanation (i.e. sense of purpose and
control); and last, a ‘biological’ explanation (i.e. genetic inheritance).
