Global community

“One day, humans will form a global community where cooperation and general consensus will overcome division and conflict.”

Consider the sentence above.  As we go through the semester and study events and human interactions, consider whether you think this statement is true or false based upon what has already occurred in the world over the last five hundred years.  You will then write an essay either supporting or attacking the statement.  Your argument should be based upon historical facts which demonstrate a pattern of human behavior that might help you predict what will happen in the future.

For the purposes of your essay, only consider the historical events that occurred between 1492 C.E and 2000 C.E. Using facts that you have obtained from your reading, videos, discussions or any other resources that were made available to you during the semester, make a strong argument either for or against this statement.  The essay is not intended to be a research paper (although you may use outside resources if you have to).  Instead, it is a persuasive essay.  Within the unit, there is a link to a website that discusses how to write a persuasive essay (if you have never done one before).  The key is to create a clear and concise argument throughout the essay which takes into consideration the full scope of global history.  To be even more effective, you should also offer arguments which counter the viewpoint which opposes yours.

Your paper should be at least six full pages long (not five and a half!) and should be typed in a font size of 12 (Calibri, Times New Roman or a similar font style are preferable – don’t use a “large” font).
