Read “The Privileges of the Parents” by Margaret A. Miller, in your text (628-630). Then, write a 2-3 page, argumentative response, guided by question 3, on page 630. It reads: “According to Miller, the United States is ‘becoming as caste-bound a society as any in the Old World’ (para. 9). What does she mean? How does she support her statement?” Essentially, you’re looking for Miller’s central claim or argument; then you make your own argument by agreeing or disagreeing with Miller’s position. That agreement/disagreement will inform your thesis statement.
Considerations
• You are entering into an ongoing conversation:
o What is the issue?
o What does the author say about the issue?
o What ideas does she seem to be responding to?
o What do you say about the issue?

o Frame your answer to this question as your THESIS STATEMENT.

• Compose two-three body paragraphs in which you critically respond to two-three ideas from Miller’s argument that you agree or disagree with.

• Conclude your essay with a restatement of your thesis and why your response is valid and important.
