ETHICS: FIRST PAPER ASSIGNMENT

    ETHICS: FIRST PAPER ASSIGNMENT

What is vital is that you must include your own perspective in writing this 4-6 page paper. The paper will be formulated as a dialogue modeled after or inspired by Plato’s dialogues. It should feature two or three characters (three maximum), each of whom brings something different to the dialectical exchange. Since the point of the dialogue form is to develop a genuine dialectic, in which every position is subjected to careful examination, it is important that you also question your own perspective as it is represented by one of the characters. In other words, get the characters to really question each other (hopefully, get them to question you). Be sure to provide arguments rather than simply asserting opinions. I don’t expect you to come to a definite answer to the problem being addressed, but try to provide a graceful conclusion. While the conversational nature of the paper might be less formal than other ways of writing, do not let the potential informality promote sloppy writing.

Note that the following suggestions are neither paper titles nor topics themselves, just problems from which topics might be derived.

Write a dialogue about one of the following:
    -A controversial moral issue.
    -An international political issue.
-The meaning of honor, and (perhaps) its relation to reputation.
-The significance of etiquette in relation to ethics.
-The nature of a “good life” in the modern world.
-A topic of your own (which must meet my approval before you commence
    writing).
