Essay Four: Good News

    Essay Four: Good News
    Subscriptions to newspapers?print and online versions are declining. Part of the reason could be that much of the news is available free-of-charge online and through smart phone applications. In addition, we can hear the daily news on televi-sion or on the radio. We know that much of what is reported is dreadful. It’s about all the horrid things happening. Sometimes, when someone with a disturbed mind, learns of a despicable event, and the publicity it garners, it encourages him/her to commit what psychologists term a ‘copy cat’ crime.

    Considerations: Let’s pretend that you rule all the American news outlets. You are a law-abiding person with a positive, cheery outlook. Since you’re in charge, you have decided that only good news will heretofore be reported. So, on the Internet, on cell phones, in the newspapers, on TV and radio, only upbeat stories will be reported in the USA. What types of international, nation-al, and local stories will your new include? What modification will this make to human behavior? How will it affect Americans? How will your good news impact circulation of print newspapers? Might your decision influence the economy of the nation?

    Directions: Go to www.google.com. Click on ‘news’. Find some international and national stories. How could the articles you se-lect be viewed as good news? What would you have to omit? What could you add?or elaborate on? Now, look at the website for the city or town in which you reside. Which local stories are positive? Which ones could you alter to include in your news re-ports? You need all three types of news.

    Research: Tell our research librarians the name of the community in which you live. She will tell you the name of the newspaper that covers your city or town. She will give you its Internet URL. Three points. Remember, use Chicago Manuscript Style to quote and footnote the news which you extract from a site or from a newspaper. Our research librarians may be able to give you leads on finding information about what psychologists say about copy-cat crime.

    Length: a minimum of two full pages of type, but no longer that three.

    Due: EN101 = Monday, February 18
    EN102 = Friday, February 22
