An Argument Supporting an interpretation on the modern drama “Beauty” by Jane Martin by focusing on an analysis of the play.

Essay Four should be an argument supporting your interpretation of one of the modern dramas . Trifles, Sure Thing, The Cuban Swimmer, Beauty, or The Sound of a Voice. To focus your interpretation, use any of the suggestions in Chapter 44 (“Writing about a Play”). If you decide to write on Trifles, be sure that your approach to the play is not too similar to those of the student report or the drama review essay on pages 1959 – 62. Chapter 48 (“Critical Approaches to Literature”) also offers useful suggestions. If you decide to write a comparison essay, do not try to discuss more than two plays.

Don’t forget to use present tense verbs to discuss events or characters from plays.

Be sure to use MLA-style parenthetical documentation when citing from the play or from the notes or critical opinion selections in our text. See especially the examples of how to handle block quotes from plays in Chapter 44 of our main textbook (Kennedy and Gioia 1963). If you are comparing two plays or including ideas from critics, including the authors of our textbook, always include enough information (usually just the author’s last name) along with the page number to keep reader clear as to which author you are citing. If you use critical sources from outside our text, include a list of works cited at the end of
the essay and include also in the list an entry for the play and / or any critics included in our textbook.
