ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND AUDITING
In 1962 Rachel Carson in her groundbreaking book – Silent Spring – suggested that we stood at a point where two roads diverged. The first road along which we had long been travelling was deceptively easy, a smooth super-highway on which we had progressed at great speed, but at its end lay disaster. The other fork in the road offered our last chance to reach a destination that assured the preservation of the Earth.
Taking the environmental-type reporting of three multi-national companies and evidence from the press of these companies’ relationship to the environment – critically evaluate the 1962 view of Rachel Carson fifty years on. Which road have the companies taken? What does the future hold – disaster or preservation of the Earth? Has adoption of Environmental Management Systems by companies led to any real change in our relationship to the planet?
