English and Literature

The goal of this essay is to explore the themes and issues that we have been discussing so far this semester.

Although this is an open topic paper, you should keep in mind that it must relate to the issues we have been discussing in class in some way. I recommend selecting a primary text already read in class for this essay. You may, however, select to read an additional primary text not read in class if you are planning on using it to make an argument about one of the in-class texts.

-American mythology
-American imperialism
-American exceptionalism
-Representations of Adolescence and/or Childhood
-The Postcolonial Child
-Tribal Sovereignty and Native American Literature
-Consumer Culture and the Child
-The “Disappearance of Childhood”
Remember that you are not limited to these topics. This is just to help you get started. You may also want to expand and/or develop an idea from one of your reading responses. I encourage you to talk about your final essay with me after class one day or via email.
