1. Phases of Emergency Management
Your reading assignments so far included a brief introduction to the four phases of emergency management. They are mitigation (or prevention), preparedness, response and recovery.
Respond to and discuss with your classmates why the emergency management organization must adequately address each phase to be effective.
Provide at least one example from a previous disaster where too little or too much attention to one phase, affected the outcome of another phase.

2. I-35 Mississippi River Bridge Collapse
On August 1, 2007, the I35W bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, Minnesota collapsed at the height of rush hour traffic. Vehicles were sent crashing into the river below.

3. National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)
The NFIP was created by Congress in 1968 to allow property owners to purchase additional insurance to cover flooding. Respond to this this topic by doing the following:

Despite the availability of federally backed flood insurance, many homeowners fail to purchase coverage.

Why do you think that many homeowners continue to fail to purchase this critical coverage?
As the emergency manager for your community, what would you do to encourage greater participation in the NFIP program in your community?
