Please prepare all three topics: only one will appear on the exam. 1. Compare and contrast two images of Chairman Mao produced before 1976 and two images produced after 1976. What purposes do these images of Mao serve, and how do they represent Chairman Mao?
2. Since 1949, the theme of Chinese society and the individual’s place in society has been an important issue in art. Choose three to four works of art that address this question in different ways. How is Chinese society represented and how is the individual’s responsibility or relationship to larger society characterized or described in these works of art?
3. Choose three or four art works that represent the artist in some way. What role does the artist perform in these images and how is he or she represented? What private and social issues do your choices address in their work?
