Universal access to healthcare is one of the social determinants of health. The goal of universal health coverage is to ensure that all people obtain the health services they need without suffering financial hardship when paying for them. This requires:
o a strong, efficient, well-run health system;
o a system for financing health services;
o access to essential medicines and technologies;
o a sufficient capacity of well-trained, motivated health workers (WHO, 2014)
While Australia has a universal health care system, health inequalities and/or inequities exist within the system.
For this discussion paper you are required to:
a) Identify one factor that may lead to inequitable access to healthcare in Australia, and
b) discuss the role of healthcare professionals in addressing this factor to promote access to healthcare services
I have decided to choose the factor which is location or place of residence ie. rural and remote may lead to inequitable access to health care in Australia.
