Decline of Sparta
Write a historical defense using the following sentence as a start for a thesis: Sparta’s decline in the fourth century B.C.E. was brought on by both internal and external issues (better thesis statements will narrow this thesis further but you will not be able to narrow it until you have read the sources). For the internal argument, focus on 1 or 2 points to defend by using only the writings of Xenophon (Nagle, Ch 7, A.1.) and Aristotle (Nagle, Ch 7, A.5); for the external argument, focus on 1 or 2 points to defend using only the writings of Xenophon (Nagle, Ch 7, A. 2, 4, and 5). If you require a secondary resource for the introduction, use Dunstan but only in the introduction. Paraphrase sources and cite them. Do not quote these sources. Analysis represents your own critical thinking and support comes from briefly paraphrasing the primary source.
If another author were to read your sentence and recognize the idea or facts behind that sentence (even if the words are different), then you MUST cite the original author. Also, many students properly paraphrase a source and then mistakenly repeat the idea of that source in the following sentence thinking they are offering their own analysis.
