    You are expected to

    • Type your work in the template provided using Arial Font (12 point font size) or similar. The template is available to download from Moodle (in the Assessments section). You can then type your answer directly in the template, save your work as you go and then submit the final version via Moodle.     A. Make a correct reference, using the Harvard style for the following:
    • A journal
    • A newspaper
    • A book
    • Reference a chapter in a book that has been edited by one or more people
    • A website

    B. Select a short article in Newburn (no more than a couple of pages) e.g. mugging or victim support.
    • Summarise the article in your own words (200 words maximum)
    • Include a direct quotation of more than 3 lines
    • Include a direct quotation of 1 line only

    C. Using the internet, search for Birkbeck library then:
    • Find e-journals and locate the British Journal of Criminology
    • Then locate an article on prisons from the journal
    • Write down the title of the article and reference correctly using the Harvard style
    • Next, still in e-journals, find Nexis UK and locate an article on violent crime from a tabloid and a broadsheet
    • Give the title of each article accurately reference using Harvard method and the date you accessed them

     

    D. Look at the following perspectives associated with Criminology:
    • The Chicago School
    • Anomie
    • Strain Theory
    • Labelling
    Select one of these perspectives. Define and analyse it in your own words (500 words maximum).
    E. Select an essay title from the list given in Study Skills 1 lecture:
    • Make an essay plan for a 2,000 word essay (500 words maximum)
    • The essay plan should include:
    ? The essay title / question you have chosen
    ? A clear thesis statement or overall argument that you would make in answering the essay question
    ? A clear indication of sub-arguments that would support the thesis statement/overall argument
    ? A list of specific places where you would research for relevant information

     

    F. Write out a bibliography for your essay plan using 4 books, 3 journal articles and 2 websites using the Harvard style of referencing.

     

    G. Devise an Action Plan for exam revision (300 words maximum)
    • This should be very specific and include an awareness of your lifestyle and other commitments
    • Suggestions of what you could include:
    ? A list of specific tasks you will undertake to prepare for your exam
    ? A justification of why those tasks will be useful
    ? A timeline of when you will complete each task
    ? Identification of the areas you feel you need to spend the most time on and why

     

     

    H. Write a concluding paragraph explaining clearly: (500 words maximum)
    • Any key difficulties with this assignment
    • What you feel you have learned about study skills
    • What you feel you have learned about yourself during this assessment
