Respond to three (3) of the following prompts. Your responses must be typed, double-spaced and roughly between 600 and 900 words EACH. Include a references section at the bottom of your exam. Specify which prompts you are answering. Submit as one document.

In class we have discussed many different policing policies and practices. Discuss two policing policies or practices, one that you think is effective and that should be utilized more often, and one that you think is either ineffective or flawed and that should be discontinued. Be sure to discuss at least one advantage and one disadvantage of EACH policy/practice, and then make your argument for which should be kept, and which should be discontinued. Use in class examples, outside readings, and more importantly, provide as much empirical support for your argument as possible.
As the “Gatekeepers of the Criminal Justice System,” police officers exercise more discretion than any other agent within the CJS. Is this the way it should be? In other words, do you favor a zero-tolerance approach to policing, or should police officers be allowed to single-handedly decide which individuals enter the CJS? Discuss at least two advantages and two disadvantages of allowing police officers to utilize discretion, and then describe your position on the issue. Provide as much empirical support for your position as possible
Discuss two courtroom policies or practices, one that you think is effective and that should be utilized more often, and one that you think is either ineffective or flawed and that should be discontinued. Also, be sure to discuss at least one advantage and one disadvantage of each policy/practice, and then make your argument for which should be kept, and which should be discontinued. Use your notes from class, but more importantly provide as much empirical support for your argument as possible
Discuss the key differences between our current model of justice (i.e. primarily punitive) and the restorative justice model. Discuss at least TWO advantages and TWO disadvantages of moving away from a more punitive model of justice to a more restorative model. Then, describe your position on the issue, and why you think we should either stick with our current model of justice or why we should move to a restorative model. Provide as much empirical support for your position as possible
We have heard the saying “do the crime, do the time”, but even after serving their time and “repaying their debt to society,” released felons have fewer civil rights than the rest of the population. Describe one of the rights that ex-felons lose upon their re-entry into society. Then discuss how do you think that the loss of that right influences an ex-felons’ likelihood of recidivism? Finally, discuss whether or not you believe that the loss of the civil right you chose is a fair punishment in light of how its loss might influence an individual’s likelihood of reoffending. Provide examples from the book, from lectures, but more importantly provide as much empirical support as possible.
