This project is about creating your own concert project (must be classical music) and this needs to be written in proper, professional musical
language. So if you can’t do that, please don’t take up this job.
I’ve attached a sample of how a concert program should and would look like (it is a lot longer than what you’re supposed to write)
My rough idea of this concert program is following:
, I would probably hold a string quartet playing in a smaller setting, preferably somewhere more relaxing than serious. The mood and the atmosphere
would be comfortable yet lively. The audience would be able to enjoy the performance with a light and pleasing heart, serving as a place to sit back
and absorb the music. I would also like the audience to experience excitement and exhilaration, choosing music that has slow and fast tempo, which
would give a contrast of adrenaline fun, yet also a taste of subtle kind of fun. The theme would hover on the subject of the lack of anxiety and the
fullness of adventure. I think that the combination of string quartet in a subtle, collapsed location would be an ideal ?concert? for people who
want a comfortable time slot for the inner: self-reflection, introspection, and the outer: observation, imagination.
Here are the instructions:
In your program, you want to have a page that outlines the program:
Location: (Must be somewhere in Boston, MA) Please be more creative than a performing hall
Name of Performing Group
Conductor/Director’s Name
TITLE OF THE CONCERT EVENT (what is its theme? Make it a fun title but also informative!)
List of musical works:
Composer Title Date (followed by a listing of the movements)
Where will the intermission be?
PROGRAM NOTES:
Begin with a paragraph about the concert as a whole: its rationale. Not lengthy. Then, for each work:
You can have a few sentences about the composer: birth/death dates, nationality, and any other relevant intro. But the focus is the music (very
important), not the composer, so not more than a paragraph.
For each piece of music: Think about what you can say that will help listeners appreciate the music. Something about themes? form? meter? program?
orchestration? I want this to be your own original ideas. If I find you have copied your ideas from another source, you’ll get a zero. The point of
this is for you to practice describing music. And you can do it! Up to two pages per composition, depending on length, specific items on program,
etc. (you can consult with me if questions). Total length of project: About 7-8 pages double-spaced. I expect you to have listened to every piece on
your program in its entirety!
(The sample pages attached here are way longer than what you should write.)
