Counselor Ethics and Responsibilities

    Counselor Ethics and Responsibilities

Consider yourself a future counselor as you write. Provide a thoughtful response to each of the following sections, including specific, concrete examples to illustrate your ideas. Use the headings given below to separate each section of your paper; each section (Counselor Values, Client Rights, Responsibility to Warn and Protect, Client Record-Keeping, Topic of Choice) should contain 250-300 words.
    Counselor Values
    1) Describe your personal values and attitudes toward two of the following issues, as reflected in the brief scenarios provided. Select the issues about which you hold the strongest values and opinions. For each situation, describe how you would counsel the client identifying the ethical issues that you would consider in deciding whether and how to provide counseling. HINT: Make sure you reference your ethical codes from either NAADAC or ACA.
    a) Abortion. (A 19-year-old rape victim wants an abortion, but her parents are vehemently opposed to abortion on religious grounds and have stated that they will no longer consider her their daughter if she proceeds. The young woman is firm in her plans but wants your help in changing her parents’ attitudes.)
    b) Gay adoption. (John and Bill, after living in a committed relationship for 7 years, decide that they want to begin a family. They have differing opinions about whether to use a surrogate mother or adopt a child.)
    Client Rights
    1) Identify in hierarchical order the four most important client rights that you believe a counselor has an obligation to protect and describe how you will incorporate these rights into your professional practice.
    Responsibility to Warn and Protect
    1) Identify the factors that you will consider in order to determine your “duty to warn” and “duty to protect” responsibilities as a counselor. Create a scenario for each of these two situations and describe how you will apply specific factors to make a decision about how to proceed. Scenarios should be complex and include sufficient ambiguity that reasonable counselors might make different decisions about how to precede. Identify the ethical issues that you considered in making your decision.
    Client Record-Keeping
    1) Discuss how client record-keeping is related to competent, ethical practice. Identify the components of a clinical record that you believe are most important for a) protecting the client’s right to a professional standard of care and b) protecting the counselor from liability.
    Topic of Choice
    1) From the material covered in the first four modules, select one ethical issue that you find most interesting or controversial or that you believe will be most challenging for you to manage in your future practice as a counselor. Explain why this issue is significant for you and what additional professional growth experiences would provide you the knowledge, experience, or insight to deal effectively with this issue in counseling. Create a brief case scenario involving this issue that would be difficult for you to manage comfortably as a professional counselor. Identify the steps that you would go through to decide how to proceed with the client you describe.
    Writing Suggestions
    1) Writing resources: Review the following resources to assist you in completing this assignment:
    a) Refer to the “GCU Academic Writing Guidelines Resource”.
    b) Refer to the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, read the style guide, and use the templates for this course.
    c) Refer to the GCU library and review the tutorials for quick tips and resources. The GCU library can be accessed through my.gcu.edu
    d) Refer to the Center for Learning & Advancement (CLA) which provides online tutoring as well as webinar workshops.
    2) Use of examples
    a) As you develop your ideas, use clear examples to illustrate your point. Draw upon personal examples, use cases, and apply ethical principles to practical work settings. Tie your examples into the point you are making, but avoid giving too many details or getting lost in the personal example.
    3) Creativity and depth of thinking: Write a paper that reflects your own uniqueness and ideas rather than merely giving a summary of the material in the book.
    a) Do not make your papers mere summaries; rather focus on a clear position that you take on a specific question or issue.
    b) Approach the material in an original way.
    c) Focus on a particular issue or topic that you find personally significant. Since you have choice in what aspect to focus on, select an aspect of a problem that will allow you to express your beliefs.
    d) Show depth in expanding on your thoughts.
    4) Integration and application: This paper should emphasize an application of ethical principles and ethical reasoning to counseling practice.
    a) Demonstrate that you know the material or the issues involved through an integration of the codes and the readings, accurate understanding of readings, critical evaluation of videos and readings, and ability to apply both readings and videos to practical situations.
    b) Apply your ideas to specific populations that you expect to work with—both in counseling and noncounseling situations. You may want to apply parts of your paper to teaching, working with the elderly, working in corrections, working with adolescents, etc.
    c) Make your paper a personal and meaningful experience by showing how you would apply ethical reasoning to dealing with ethical dilemmas.
    d) In writing about ethical issues, be sure to zero in on a specific message. Read what the question is asking and write directly to that specific question. What do you most want to convey?
    e) In writing about a case, be sure to show that you can apply ethical principles and your knowledge of the ethics codes in discussing a case given in the Issues and Ethics book.
