Control & Co-ordination

    Control & Co-ordination

    a) Produce annotated diagrams that illustrate how nerve impulses travel
    i) along a neurone
    ii) across a synapse.

    b) Diagram 2 shows the rapid change upon depolarisation called an action potential. Explain what is happening at each of the numbered parts of the graph.

    Task 5
The reward centre in the brain is responsible for pleasurable feelings. The synapses here use a neurotransmitter called dopamine that binds to receptors on the postsynaptic membrane. To remove the dopamine, it is transported back through the presynaptic membrane. Cocaine binds to the protein that transports dopamine.

a)Explain the following terms or words
    i) Presynaptic membrane
    ii) Post synaptic membrane
    iii) Receptors in synapse
    iv) Dopamine

    b) Using the above information, explain what makes cocaine addicts seek repeated doses of the drug.
    Using presynaptic, postsynaptic, dopamine

    a) You are walking barefoot along the beach when you step on a sharp piece of
glass. Using diagrams, explain the nervous response to this event.

    b) Produce a table comparing and contrasting simple and conditioned reflexes.
    Task 7
    a) Define and explain the term, sensory receptor.

    b) From the following list of sense organs, select one example and produce detailed diagrams to show how the sense organ works. Describe how the structure of the sense organ you have chosen relates to its function.
    • eye
    • pressure receptors in the skin
    • tongue
    • hearing organs ear
    • balance organs of the ear
    • nose
    a) On diagram 3, identify the positions draw in the following endocrine glands.
    Pancreas
    Pineal
    Thymus
    Thyroid
    Parathyroid
    Ovaries
    Testes
    Adrenal

    b) Explain the role of one hormone secreted from each of the above glands.
    (approx 150 words)

    c) Briefly explain how protein hormones and steroid hormones are transported to their target cells.(approx 50 words)

    Ass criteria 5.1 @L2 ,5.2@ Level 3

a)Using diagrams, explain the role of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland.
    Ass criteria 7.1 @ L2

    b) Human growth in height is controlled mainly by hormones from the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary. Using these hormones as an example, explain how these two glands are linked.

    c) Oxytocin is a hormone that, amongst other things, controls milk ejection in breastfeeding. Use control of the secretion of this hormone to explain the link between the hypothalamus and the posterior pituitary.
