For the Comparative Essay, you will compare “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education,” by Paulo Freire, with “The Achievement of Desire,” by Richard Rodriguez. The goal of this assignment is to tie together readings from our text with outside, scholarly sources.
Here is the prompt: Both Freire and Rodriguez write about the value of education. Freire posits that the problem-posing method of education is necessary to help us think critically. Rodriguez focuses on how education changes a person (and one may argue that when we think critically, we change). Compare Freire and Rodriguez. How are they similar in their views? How are they different? You must use examples from the text. You must also support your views with outside sources.
You will have a minimum of 4-5 sources in your Works Cited page. Two of the sources are the essays. The other 2-3 sources will be from scholarly sources. What is a scholarly source? It is not something from Wikipedia or Cosmopolitan. You should use the databases in our library. You have access to all the databases online; you just need your ID number. There are videos provided under Assignments to help you navigate the databases. They are in the folder labeled “Using the Rose Library Databases.” If you are having trouble locating sources, you should post your question in our discussion board forum for Jessica Crowe.
The essay needs to be in MLA format. There are examples of formatting under MLA Help in Assignments. Your essay should be between 1,000-1,500 words in length. In this class, the essays get progressively harder (and so does my grading).
