Community: Success or Failure as a Cult TV Show
analyze a specific television series or program, with particular attention to the ideologies it affirms. You should not choose a television show based on your personal taste – often it is more difficult to write about subjects on which you bring in preconceived ideas. Choose your object of study based on the kinds of shows that you find to be the most generative of the sorts of ideas we’ve been exploring throughout the semester. You should consider the show’s economic / industrial determinants (who produces it? on what network does it air?), its aesthetic determinants (what is the show’s basic premise? what is its mise-en-scene? how has it evolved over time?), and its reception (how has it been interpreted by television critics? by fans? by media scholars?). Your show may be contemporary or historical, American or foreign, fictional or otherwise. You are encouraged to choose programs outside of primetime: reality-based programming, news or entertainment magazines, animation, etc. In answering these questions, you should come to a conclusion about the show’s particular ideological underpinnings, as well as its relationship to the overall television landscape. Arguments should answer the fundamental question: Why is this particular show an important object for television studies?
