Colonialism

    Readings:

    • Jürgen Osterhammel, Colonialism: A Theoretical Overview (Princeton, NJ: Markus Wiener Publishers, 2010).

    • Norrie MacQueen, Colonialism (Harlow: Pearson Education Ltd., 2007).

Answer each of the following questions in the form of three separate essays . Each essay should be two pages (600-750 words) long.

    1. Why can we not directly correlate the terms “colony,” “colonization,” and “colonialism” as more or less referring to the same thing? What are the differences between these terms, and how do they relate to each other?

    2. According to Osterhammel, “There is no history of colonialism, per se, just histories of individual colonialisms.” Compare and contrast Osterhammel and MacQueen’s approach to periodizing or mapping out a history of colonialism, and what are the pros and cons of these different approaches?

    3. What was “new” about the “New Imperialism” of the 19th century, and what factors contributed to this “newness”?
