For your second paper, you will be using Coetzee’s arguments from Giving Offense to analyze either The People Vs. Larry Flynt. This assignment encourages you to use Coetzee’s ideas as a lens—instead of coming up with a brand new argument, your argument will be about how one or two of Coetzee’s arguments works or doesn’t work with one of the texts we’ve studied. Think about the feminist issues we’ve discussed in class, particularly those pertaining to second-wave feminism and its virtues and flaws. Then reread the Coetzee excerpts and pick out 5-6 statements that you can prove/disprove using the materials we’ve studied. You can then narrow your topic down to a cohesive theme, using at least four direct quotations from Coetzee in your paper. You should also quote the work you are analyzing. You’ll notice that I’m not giving you traditional “prompt questions” here—that’s because I want you to really allow Coetzee’s work to be your guide, your lens. Again, try to find an aspect of the topic that interests you. Your paper should be 4-6 pages of double-space text in a legible, 12-point font.
