ASSIGNMENT and ESSAY STRUCTURE:

Write a 7 page analytical essay om the MONOGRAPH or EDITED VOLUME you have chosen. This essay should answer as many of the following questions as possible. If you wish to write more than 7 pages you may do so. Answers to each question will be derived from information in the book. You need not look elsewhere for the answers. Bibliography and notes should be in the Chicago style. The title of your book should be either underlined or placed in italics.

– What is the author’s or editor’s professional background, education, publications, positions, and recognition? (one paragraph)
– What is the topic of the book or the central problem that the author or the editor asks? (one paragraph)
– Why did the author or editor find the existing scholarship (secondary sources) on his or her topic inadequate or wrong? (one-three paragraphs). Did the author or editor feel that he or she will use existing scholarship as a foundation for his or her own work? Information here can be found at the beginning of the book.
– What is the author’s or editor’s own THESIS? (photocopy the page in the book that contains the thesis and turn it in with the essay) (one paragraph)
-How does the author or the contributors to the edited volume (the writers of the individual essays) use primary sources to prove his or her thesis or the thesis of the edited volume?
-TAKE 2 EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY SOURCES AND DISCUSS EACH IN ONE PAGE. BE SURE TO PHOTOCOPY THE PAGE IN THE BOOK WHERE EACH EXAMPLE PRIMARY SOURCE APPEARS.
– How does the author or the contributors to the edited volume (the writers of the individual essays) use SECONDARY SOURCES to prove his or her thesis of the edited volume?
– TAKE 2 EXAMPLES OF SECONDARY SOURCES AND DISCUSS EACH IN ONE PAGE. BE SURE TO PHOTOCOPY THE PAGE IN THE BOOK WHERE EACH EXAMPLE PRIMARY SOURCE APPEARS. (These secondary sources should be within the text)
– How successful did you find the author’s pr contributor’s effort to prove his or her thesis? For example, did the thesis accord with what you learned from other classes or books? Did the thesis or argument hang together logically? Did the author leave out any important angles or aspects that you felt needed to be included? Explain in detail. ( a page and a half)
