1. Leon Festinger’s social comparison theory suggests that we compare ourselves to members of a reference group in order to assess our own behavior. (a) In thinking about your own tendencies to engage in social comparison, can you identify different reference groups that you use to assess distinct kinds of behavior (e.g., academic performance, athletic performance, etc.)? (b) What does your choice of reference groups tell you about the concept of social comparison?
2. Some researchers suggest that elections are determined mainly by the public’s impressions of the candidates rather than the candidate’s views on important issues. (a) Do you think this is the case? (b) If you do not believe this is the case, why not? If you believe this is the case, what are some possible explanations for this behavior on the part of voters?
3. Discuss (a) optimistic and pessimistic attributional styles, (b) identify which type you believe reflects the way you tend to approach situations and why you feel this type might represent your style; and (c) give a “personal” example of when you display(ed) this optimistic or pessimistic style (be specific in your example) .
