BIO 331 Homework Assignment #2 (10 points)
DUE Monday, March 21st, 2016
Objective: The objective of this exercise is to build your confidence in finding primary scientific literature that relates to the field of immunology. Some of the articles that you identify may be used later in the course for discussion and analysis.
- Go to NCBI PubMed
- Select Advanced under the search box
- In PubMed Advanced Search Builder go to Builder and click on the All Fields tab to select Journal. In the blank space type journal of immunology
- Next click on the other All Fields tab to select Date – Create. In the blank space type 2016 then click Search
- Find 3 articles that interest you. You can click on the title of the articles to read the abstract of the article. At this point it is not important to understand what the article says, but it is important that the article peeks your curiosity.
- Summarize all three articles in NO MORE THAN 3 SENTENCES TOTAL. In your summary you should simply state what cell types were analyzed and whether innate or adaptive immune responses were measured. Include reference citation numbers in your summary.
For example: “In article 1, the investigators determined the effects of IL-21 on CD8 T cells, which are cells of the adaptive immune system (1). In article 2…etc.”
- Compile the citation information of your articles in the following format
References:
- Authors, Publication Year, Article title, Journal, Publication date, PMID
- Authors, Publication Year, Article title, Journal, Publication date, PMID
- Authors, Publication Year, Article title, Journal, Publication date, PMID
Example citation:
- Tian Y, Cox MA, Kahan SM, Ingram JT, Bakshi RK, Zajac AJ. (2016) A Context-Dependent Role for IL-21 in Modulating the Differentiation, Distribution, and Abundance of Effector and Memory CD8 T Cell Subsets. J Immunol. 2016 Jan 29. pii: 1401236. [Epub ahead of print] PMID: 26826252
- Include your full name, date, and BIO 331 at the top of the page.
Note that your selected 3 articles should differ from those of another student. Copying someone else’s selected articles is not acceptable. In the event that students have exactly the same articles selected, the students will be asked to redo this assignment, but they will have to select six articles.
