“Battle Royale” and “Every Day Use”).
You may choose to employ any of the methods of analysis covered in this course so far. You can write a comparative essay between one or more texts, you may write a character analysis, you can evaluate a particular story to determine if the author succeeded at conveying their message or even write an explication of one of the poems you have read, listened to, or viewed.
Some possible topics you would like to explore will be whether or not Sammy made the correct choice in quitting his job. Was he motivated by self-serving interests (meeting the girls) or standing up for an ideal he felt strongly about (A & P and their poor treatment of the customers is beneath him)? Or perhaps you will want to write about the racism in “Everyday Use” and “Battle Royal.” Perhaps who deserves the quilts more? The aesthetic qualities of imagery in beat poetry and slam poetry. Or even a line by line analysis of documenting the imagery and theme of the poem you liked the best.
This essay will be graded with regards to mechanics and content. Mechanics will be worth 1/4 of the overall grade. An F in mechanics means you can get no more than a C no matter how good the content. It would be in your best interest to employ literary concepts and terms where they apply most.
