You have recently joined BusStats as an assistant to the Finance Director. Your predecessor left the company in a re-organisation last September and you have been tasked with analysing some historical data from 2011 and 2012.

    Context

“The widespread use of highly automated manufacturing processes has greatly changed the role played by labour costs in total manufacturing costs. Overhead costs related to such variables as material quantities have begun to play a greater role in the calculation of total manufacturing costs. Direct labour no longer may be the most effective base for applying factory overhead costs to various jobs and products. There should be a strong cause-and-effect relationship between the overhead costs incurred and the base chosen for their application ie ‘Cost drivers’ such as direct labour hours, units produced etc..

The company has found three possible ‘Cost drivers’ for its monthly factory Overhead Costs (£000) ie Direct Labour Hours, Machine Hours and the Number of production set-ups. All data are monthly totals.”
