    Great Sphinx of Khafre
The Great Sphinx of Khafre in English has a literal translation father of dread. It is the statue made solely of Limestone and contains a human’s head that has the physique of a lion. It is found on the Giza Tableland in Egypt and the human head on the statue represents one of the ancient Egyptian pharaohs known as Khafre. The lion body of the figure had a symbolic meaning of royalty. It also had a connection to the sun as it symbolized the horizon. The fusion of a human head and the physique of a lion was a feature that was common in ancient Egypt. On observation, one can notice that the chief of the Sphinx is smaller than its body. The sculptors also realized the same and to maintain the aesthetic beauty of the sculptor they increased the length of the body. The statue is the biggest monolith statue on the globe as it measures nearly 21 meters high. This essay will contain an in-depth analysis of the Great Sphinx of Khafre.
The Sphinx as it is commonly known underwent construction from a lone piece of limestone that was exposed after workers finished digging a quarry that looked like a horseshoe in the Giza Plateau. The statue stands at 66 feet tall and 240 feet in length. It is the biggest and most ancient monolithic statue in the world. Monolith only means it was whittled out of one huge piece of rock. The original name of the statue is unknown as Sphinx was a name borrowed from Greek mythology (Jordan 39). In ancient Greek, the lion that had a human head was called a Sphinx. Researchers believe that the name underwent reception 2, 000 years after the construction of the statue. Since the Egyptians did not write history, it was difficult accessing any ancient information regarding the status? Researchers, however, deduced that the Sphinx symbolized a divine being such as a king. An inscription from the timeline when the Sphinx underwent construction indicates that the statue has a direct relationship to Ruti. The being known as Ruti was a lion god believed to sit at the gates of the underworld and guard the horizon where the sun begun and ended the day.
The appearance of the Sphinx has undergone severe distortion over the years due to vandalism and weathering such that it lacks the nose and beard. Records indicate that in 1402, a Sufi zealot came to the Sphinx and disfigured it. The reason for this according to the zealot was to repair some doctrinal errors that were in the Sphinx (Schoch 243). Archeological excavations near the area where the Sphinx was revealed traces of a stone beard and royal cobra emblem that were once pieces of the statue. The figure also contains visible residue of red pigments that makes the researchers believe that the Sphinx was once completely painted red.
To sum it all up, the Sphinx is an important part of ancient history since it is the largest monolith statue in the world. The original name given to it upon completion is unknown. The name Sphinx is from ancient Greek mythology that meant a being with the bonce of a man and the physique of a lion. It is an amazing piece of artwork that deserves the applause it receives from critics.
