By the time that you are done with this class you will know more about entrepreneurship than most people. Indeed, you will be an expert on entrepreneurship. With this in mind, imagine that have been hired as a consultant on entrepreneurship in a lawsuit involving TaskRabbit. The law firm that hired you wants you to answer this question: Are the people working for TaskRabbit entrepreneurs or employees? I want you to write a letter to the lead attorney in the case explaining your position. Please do this in the form of an essay. Be crisp, be brief, be precise, and be clear.

Here are some detailed directions:

Introduction (150 words): Write an engaging introduction in which you lay out what is at stake here in this case. Why is it important to know whether the rabbits (as they are euphemistically called) are entrepreneurs or employees? Who gains and who loses from the classification of the rabbits as employees, as opposed to independent contractors.

Middle (500 words): This is where you get to lay out the facts of your case. (1) Describe TaskRabbit. When did it come about? What does it do? What’s it mean to work for TaskRabbit? Here you will have to do a bit of extra research. We talked about TaskRabbit in class, but the material that we covered (in class and/or in readings) will not be enough to answer this question fully. Do a little extra work here. Don’t go overboard, but provide enough background for the law firm to understand what is going on. (2) As you think about whether the rabbits are entrepreneurs, ponder over the meaning of entrepreneurship. Think about it in all of its different dimensions. Here is your chance to showcase what you have learned in the class. (3) Make the case that the rabbits of TaskRabbit are, indeed, entrepreneurs. Support your argument by describing the work of ONE author we either read about or discussed in class. (4) Now be properly scholarly and describe the opposite side of the argument as well – make the case that the rabbits are not independent contractors but employees. Here, too, be sure to support your argument by reference to the work of ONE author whose work we either read or talked about in class.

Conclusion (100 words): Are the rabbits entrepreneurs or employees? Which side do you take in this debate? Explain your position, connect your argument to the material that you presented in the middle part of your paper. Justify your position; do not simply assert it

Here are a few additional things that you need to keep in mind as you write your essay:

Your assignment cannot be longer than 750 words in total. You may distribute your 750 words in whichever way you want, but you cannot go over the world limit.
You must include your total word count at the end of your assignment. Failure to do so may result in not getting full marks on the assignment.
Once again, we are asking you to craft an essay. Your essay must have a beginning (introduction), a middle, and an end (conclusion). Your paragraphs must be well crafted and they must hang together. Do NOT use bullet points anywhere during your essay as it will count against you. Organize and plan your work. Make sure that your argument is clear, your story is engaging, and your essay is well written. If you are not sure how to write an essay, please consult the document on How to Answer an Essay Exam in Modules (under “How Does this Course Work?”).
Your work must be entirely in your own words. You may not use direct quotations from readings, videos, or lecture notes. You may rephrase other people’s work, but please do so in your own words. This is one of the best ways to show that you really understand the material at hand.
Why are we asking you to name authors? We want you to showcase what you have learned in this class. Bring in readings, refer to lecture notes. Be sure that you convince us that you have done the work required in Sociology 121. Don’t just flippantly throw in author references as if they were mere decoration – be sure that the references contribute to your overall argument.
As was the case with the second exam you may work with others in planning your essay. However – and this is a BIG however – the final product that you submit to us must be your very own work.
We ask that you submit your assignment to a Turnitin review, as a way of encouraging original work on your part. The Turnitin review is an automatic part of your submission process. I have requested bCourses to do this review for everyone. You will receive a Turnitin score soon after submitting your work. (Sometimes this score will appear immediately; other times it takes an hour or so to complete the review – the length of time it takes to review the work depends on foot traffic at the time that you submit your work to Turnitin.)
Can you edit your work once you have uploaded into your assignment folder? Absolutely! You can edit and change your paragraphs as many times as you wish; so long as you do so before the assignment deadline.
You don’t need a formal bibliography for the essay, unless you make references to readings that are not included in the syllabus or have not been presented to you in lectures. In-text references should include author names only (in brackets); page numbers will not be necessary.
Clarity is very, very important in this assignment. After you write your first draft, go over it and make sure that your work is comprehensive, you touch on all the important points, and that you do not leave material to your reader’s imagination. Pretend that you are writing this for a friend, not your professor or grader. Write clearly and organize your thoughts.
Spell author names correctly.
Eliminate all spelling errors and deal with problems relating to grammar. Many of you are non-native English speakers. We will take this into account as we grade your work. But don’t use this as an excuse to leave spelling errors and grammar mistakes in your essay. Check for both of these before you submit your work online.
