ANOVA

    Question 1

Note: After you have run the appropriate ANOVA, you must copy and paste the relevant tables from the SPSS output file onto this document (as you have done in class).

A movie company conducts a study to find out whether the scariness of a movie is affected by the place where the movie is seen.
Each viewer is randomly assigned to one of three samples. One sample views a particular scary movie in a movie theater, the second sample views the same movie at home, and the third sample views the same movie at a drive-in.
Viewers are then asked to rate how scared they were by the movie on a scale from 0 to 25. The higher the rating number, then the more scary was the movie.

    Theater     Home     Drive-in
    3.4    23.0    21.0
    2.0    12.0    14.0
    1.0    12.0    12.0
    11.0    11.0    10.0
    2.0    1.6    6.0
    1.0    2.0    4.0
    3.0    13.0    8.0
    3.0    22.0    6.0
    3.7    22.5    20.0

    1.    What is the independent variable?  How many levels does it have? (2 points)

    2.    What is the dependent variable? (1 point)

    3. Is this experiment a non-repeated measures ANOVA or a repeated
measures ANOVA? You MUST explain your answer. (2 points)

    4.    State the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis in terms of the place where the movie is seen and how scary it seems. (2 points)

    5.    Write out the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis in terms of the means. (2 points)

    6.    Open a new SPSS file. Enter the data according to your answer to Question 3. Email me this as an attachment. (6 points)

    7.    Run the appropriate omnibus test, plot the means and run the appropriate post hoc test.
Email me ALL this in ONE attachment (Make sure you have the omnibus test, the means plot AND the post-hoc tests in the attachment. (8 points)

    8.    Do we need to do a Levene’s Test for homogeneity of variances?
You MUST explain your answer.  (1 point)

    9.    What is the F-ratio and write down the actual numbers that were used to calculate it. (2 points)

    10.     What is the p-value?  (1 point)

    11.    Write the results of your omnibus test ANOVA in APA format.
    (3 points)

    12.     Is the omnibus test significant? You MUST explain your answer.
    (1 point)

    13.     What does your answer to Question 10 tell you about what you
should do with the null hypothesis and what does it say about the
    means? (2 points)

    14.     Look at the post hoc tests and compare the means with each other?

NOTE: You should make 3 comparisons.
For each comparison, write down: the two levels of the independent
variable, the two means, the relevant p value and explain why you conclude that the two means are or are not significantly different from each other. (9 points)

    15.    According to the post hoc tests, in which place(s) would people be most scared when watching a movie? (1 point)

    Question 2

Note: After you have run the appropriate ANOVA, you must copy and paste the relevant tables from the SPSS output file onto this document (as you have done in class).

A psychologist conducts a study to investigate the effect of room color on people’s mood.
Each participant first spends 2 hours in a blue room, then 2 hours in a red room, then, finally, 2 hours in a green room.
On leaving each room, participants rate their mood from 0 to 20. The higher the rating number, then the more happy is the participant.

    Blue     Red    Green
    3    6    17
    6    4    20
    2.4    5.6    11
    4    11    7
    6.9    9    20
    2    18    1.4
    3.9    19    13
    4    17    19

measures ANOVA? You MUST explain your answer. (2 points)

    4.    State the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis in terms of the color of the room and the ratings of happiness. (2 points)

    5.    Write out the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis in terms of the means. (2 points)
