analyzing visual sources for Indian History and demonstrate them

Due Date: Wednseday March 1, 4pm EST TIME

Instructions:  This assignment gives you the chance to practice analyzing visual sources.  Select at least 3 paintings/sketches (figures) from the Picture Essays for Chapters 4 & 5 in First Peoples.  Your sources must be from at least two different artists (Weber, Bodmer, Catlin).

Question:  Which aspects of Indian life did the artists focus on and why? To explain why, be sure to use the textbook for background information on the artists and historical context (what was happening around the time the artwork was created).

Citations: Please use parenthetical citations, e.g.,  (Calloway, 79).

Additional research is not required. The purpose of this assignment is for you to practice interpreting primary source documents. First Peoples provides ample background information, but if you want to conduct additional research, then you MUST cite your sources fully.

Length: Approximately 2 pages, typed and double-spaced, 12 pt font, 1 inch margins.

Grading Criteria: I will grade based on the quality of your analysis (as evidenced by the argument & evidence from the images that you use) and your writing (organization and style).  A successful paper states the argument in the introduction and supports it with effective use of evidence by ensuring that specific examples work to prove the argument the paper is trying to make. A good argument will make a specific claim in response to the question. Short quotations are more effective than quoting complete sentences. Block quotes are not permitted (more than three lines).

    objective:

Demonstrate the ability to analyze primary sources and use evidence to support an argument.
