1-a) Analyse the text you chose using "Narrative" as (main body
    of essay):
2-Indicate how your analysis can help us understand the film as an
    ideological text (a shorter conclusion).
3-Read ALL four relevant chapters (approaching media texts, narrative,
genre, ideology) in Branston and Stafford’s The Media Student
Handbook (any edition), including the case studies. Theoretical
approaches overlap so you will benefit from familiarity with all four. I
also recommend you read the section on research methods.
3-Read the lecture notes and the seminar reading on BREO for your
    chosen approach, and for ideology.
4-Read some more from the recommended literature about your
approach: you need to demonstrate a good understanding of the theory
    before you apply it.
5-Remember that this is a CLOSE reading of an audio-visual text. As a
media professional, you should pay attention to all elements of the text
and how they work together: images, editing, lighting, sound, camera
angles, etc. You also need to use the appropriate technical terms. This
    list of terms is useful:
    http://www.aber.ac.uk/media/Documents/short/gramtv.html. And here is
an online example of they are used in film analysis:
    http://www.unc.edu/~rlmart/eng12027/samplescene.html.The Media
    Student Handbook also includes examples.
6-Show why your analysis is valid by using examples from the text itself,
usually brief descriptions of key audio-visual elements or scenes. If you
focus on key scenes or elements, you must explain why you consider
them key and how they represent the rest of the film (in other words, do
not be tempted to watch one only a section of the film – your examples
must be placed in the context of the entire film).
7-For genre, narrative and semiotics, there is a good and extensive
    online guide here:
    http://users.aber.ac.uk/dgc/Documents/S4B/sem12.html.
8-Find out about the film or programme (IMDB.com is a good place to
start), but only include in the essay information that is relevant to your
analysis: this essay is about your interpretation of the text, not about
the film or programme in general.
9-Make sure you link your analysis to issues of ideology: it is not enough
to write about the film as ideological text in general: you need to show
how your chosen approach can be used for ideological analysis and
support this with evidence from the text.
9-If you can’t find material on the specific film, there will
almost certainly be material on the director, the genre or the cinema of
    that country.
