This is the instruction sheet for the first of five major essays. Please read the instructions very carefully.
    1. The paper is due on February 15, 2013. That will be on Friday, during regular class session.
    2. It will be an extended reflection on the meaning and value of literature.
    3. For this essay, you need to work on answers to questions below. You may choose one or use a combination, making sure that whatever set of questions you choose lead you to find answers that will produce the number of pages required for the assignment.
    a. Why do students need a separate course called literature?
    b. What can the knowledge and skills acquired from literature do for an individual?
    c. What can the knowledge and skills acquired from literature do for a community?
    d. What can the knowledge and skills acquired from literature do for the world?
    4. Remember that the answers should not stand alone. They should be integrated into an essay form where there will be a clearly stated thesis statement supported by several topic sentences.
    5. Remember, too, that where you extract information from outside sources, you will need to acknowledge those sources. All this is to ensure that you avoid plagiarism. Here, you need to use the knowledge and skills about in-text citation you acquired from EGL 1010.
    6. The essay should be 3-4 pages. It should be typewritten or computerized. If you use computer, make sure you use Times New Roman (12 pts). Remember also that if you use outside sources, you will need to include a works cited page.
