    Detailed Instructions:
You should select a social problem of interest to you. Please email your topic to the
instructor for approval (and to ensure your selection is neither too broad or too
narrow). You may select a problem with which you have had personal experience or
one with which you are not familiar; however, you are encouraged to make a selection
that will challenge and deepen you understanding of that social problem.
Your completed paper should include the following sections (please label the sections
in your paper for clarity and to ensure you have covered each topic):
    1. Overview of Social Problem: Use this section to introduce the problem.
Please be sure to include a discussion of the following
    • What IS the problem?
    • How many people are affected? How has this number changed over the
    years?
    • What is the history of this problem? Was it always a problem? Have
there been any significant events that have increased/decreased or
    otherwise changed the problem?
    • Has there been any legislation aimed at this problem?
    • Any other information you feel is pertinent to developing an
understanding of WHAT the problem is.
    2. Causes: Please provide a discussion of the main causes or reasons that this

interested in an in depth discussion of specific reasons why this problem may
    be occurring.
    3. Impact: Please provide a detailed discussion of the impact of this problem.
Be sure to discuss how the problem impacts those who directly experience it,
as well as the wider society? (For example, if you chose Drug Abuse are your
problem, please discuss how drug abuse impacts those who use — including
their their friends and family — and how it affects the wider society). Are any
    groups disproportionately affected? Why?
    4. Public Perception: Use this section to address the stigmas associated with
this problem. What stigmas are there? What are common myths or
misconceptions about this problem? Are these true? Why/why not (i.e., what
IS true)? Who does society “blame” for the problem? If societal perception is
not accurate, why does the public view continue in this misguided manner?
    5. Solutions: Please review and discuss some of the proposed solutions to this
problem (either to decrease it, lessen the impact, or to eradicate the problem).
