The artist you will refer to in writing and responding to a few questions is Beverly Buchanan. Her website is: www.beverlybuchanan.com . You will need to access her images and statements at this web address for this assignment. Ms. Buchanan is also featured in your textbook. She is an African-American artist who explores Southern vernacular architecture in her art
Your assignment is to write a few paragraphs that state how Beverly Buchanan fulfills the four roles of artists. You will find these roles mentioned in your textbook, A World of Art, 7th edition. You are to also include in your paragraphs your observations on this artist’s use of the three basic principles of art outlined above: what the content of Ms. Buchanan’s work is (what does her work mean), what is her subject matter (what does she literally show in her art), and you are to comment on the form of her work (is it sculpture, painting, drawing, etc.).
Further thoughts to include in your comments on Ms. Buchanan are: How might her art be considered “H.I.P” rather than “cool?” (HIP, meaning that her work is filled with “heart, imagination, and passion.” How? Watching and listening to her via the broadcast will help with this) Ms. Buchanan states that her interest is in creating objects that, to her, she recognizes as “home,” structures that are “living with emotion.” How does she do this, when she explicitly states that her interest is not in reproducing what most of us would commonly call “reality?” Also, how is her art a “tribute to imagination, improvisation and instincts of survival?” These are questions that can help in focusing your statements. A couple of pages will be sufficient for this.
