Descartes: distinction of soul and body

Descartes agenda in the meditations is to demonstrate the existence of god and the distinction of the soul and body. At least that is his stated program. Having read and reflected upon the text can you adduce any evidence to deny this? Given the structure and nature of the arguments is it possible even reasonable to suppose that Descartes real intent is something else? What? Explain your thesis here with as much textual support and interpretation as you can master.
