RESEARCH PAPER INFORMATION
This Research Paper provides Criminal Justice Students an opportunity to research and apply what they have learned about a particular problem in the criminal justice system today. The overall goal of the Research Paper is for students to choose a topic of interest, analyze the topic/problem by reviewing credible and evidence-based scholarly resources relative to the problems and challenges that exist, and apply the theories, concepts, and principles covered in the course. It is recommended that students review all of the assignments, requirements, and grading rubrics so that they know exactly what is expected of them throughout the course and for the final Research Paper.
In order to successfully complete the Research Paper, three (3) formative assignments and a FINAL PAPER will be completed as deliverables throughout the length of the course:
• Assignment 1: Topic Selection and Proposal
• Assignment 2: Formal Outline
• Assignment 3: Annotated Bibliography
• Assignment 4: FINAL PAPER
All written assignments must follow these formatting requirements:
• Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must conform to the APA formatting requirements. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
• Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length. APA formatting applies to the cover page as well as the entire paper.
• Utilize credible and evidence-based sources such as journal and peer-reviewed articles.
• Display accurate spelling, punctuation, and grammar, and write in a clear and organized manner.

The topic for the Research Paper should be selected in Week 1 and delivered by the end of Week 2. Students should choose a topic/problem that interests them, one that they see as a problem or challenge in the criminal justice system today. See the topic selections suggested by the Professor in the course shell. You may pick one of the suggestions or another topic if you want. Remember, you are researching an issue/problem and ultimately coming up with some credible and legitimate solutions.
THE TOPIC MUST BE APPROVED BY THE PROFESSOR IN THE WEEK 2, DISCUSSION QUESTION 1 THREAD!
(Failure to get approval will result in the Professor not accepting your paper)
Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:
1. Identify your topic and explain why it is a problem or issue for the criminal justice system.
2. Provide some research and facts on the topic and put the issue in perspective as to costs and the number of stakeholders.
3. Analyze the topic and provide for some researched solutions and possible alternatives to handling the issue.
4. Identify the preliminary research done on the topic or problem and explain what your findings are to substantiate the problem.
5. Use at least three (3) scholarly sources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia, Ask.com, Answers.com, Freedictionary.com, and other Websites like these do not qualify as scholarly. A scholarly sources is a government website with factual information and statistics, peer review articles, law review articles, criminal justice authority agencies like the Department of Justice or state websites.
