Choice One. Write a thesis-driven essay based on the following passage, which is a representative example of how anxieties about race and gender are portrayed in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. What does the passage tell us about Tom, Nick, and Gatsby as representations and/or manifestations of these anxieties?

“Self control!” repeated Tom incredulously. “I suppose the latest thing is to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife. Well, if that’s the idea you can count me out. . . . Nowadays people begin by sneering at family life and family institutions and next they’ll throw everything overboard and have intermarriage between black and white.”
Flushed with his impassioned gibberish he saw himself standing alone on the last barrier of civilization.
“We’re all white here,” murmured Jordan.

You do not necessarily need to begin your essay with this quotation—it might even serve best as the idea you work toward—but at least some of this passage should be quoted and analyzed in your essay. The thesis you develop will be your own, but you must incorporate at least some of the above passage

****Your essay must include at least one legitimate outside source. This source should come from a library database such as JSTOR or Project Muse. Please review my video on outside sources.

Your essay will be graded on both form (grammar, style, etc.) and content (your ideas). Your essay should have an introductory paragraph that includes a thesis statement and a concluding paragraph. Your essay should be carefully organized, be supported with quotations from the text, and provide a coherent argument. Be sure to provide adequate and meaningful transitions between ideas and paragraphs.

Before you submit your paper to Turnitin for a grade, you should print out a hard copy and proofread it.

Your paper MUST comply with the word count expectation. Your essay (including bibliography, etc.) should be between 1000 and 1500 words. If your essay does not comply with this expectation, it will receive a grade of F.
