11. Over the last half century, movement scholars have proposed a number of theories that attempt to explain diverse social movements that occurred in human history. In explaining why some social groups could successfully organize their challenges when others could not, each of these theories emphasize different aspects of social movements or the environments in which they occur.
Focusing on the following 5 theories,
• Breakdown Theory
• Solidarity Theory (aka organizational capacity)
• Resource Mobilization Theory
• Political Opportunities Theory
