Social Media and Health Information
According to whatis.com, social media is defined as ‘the collective of online communication channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration’.
Social media is having an ever-increasing influence on our everyday lives, with social networking platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It therefore makes sense to consider the impact of social media on health information collection and analysis.
Twitter has been used by Government agencies in regards to both disseminating health warnings and tracking outbreaks in near real time.
For this assessment you are required to research the use of Twitter in tracking a disease outbreak or public health issue and write a 1000 word essay addressing the following points:
A description of how the agency/researchers collected the information
Details of how this information was used and any key findings
An outline of two (2) positive outcomes and two (2) risks to the use of social media in terms of the public and in how we use, access and manage health information.
All work must be referenced. Please ensure you use credible sources of information dated within the last 5 years.
