Textbook for Research project: Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver.
The research paper is not about characteristics of the novel or about what the book shows about the characters lives. Only do the topic.

Page 1-
Write an opening paragraph for the completed research. In the opening identify the author, title, and type of book you are partly analyzing. The thesis needs to be more complex. Give an over view of the nature and importance of the setting in the novel.

Page 2,3,4, & 5
Find the novels place names and the characteristics of the region, the county, the town, and the national forest. Preset their names and characteristics by summary or paraphrase and provide documentation to show exactly where you found them in the novel. Then use suitable state and national websites to find out how the material related to reality. Things said about the region shows that it is southern Appalachian mountains (page, 29) and in the Virginia side of the border with Kentucky (page, 246), and you should find out if there are in fact any national forest in the region. Most local names in the novel are fictional, while more distant places are usually real. Lexington, Kentucky, is real and is accurately written of as distant from the novels locale near the Kentucky-Virginia border. However, on pages 118 and 181, kinsolver moves the Toyota plant near Lexington to a place with in commuting range for local workers from Egg Fork. Concerning time, time is mentioned in the title of the book, and there mentions of month and day in chapters. The item that need outside research is the year. On page 59, Deanna is said to have been in the forest for two years. On page 196, we learn that she heard the Dixie chicks love when she loved in Knoxville and that up on the mountain she doesn’t listen to her radio so she does not know that the Dixie chicks have became famous.

Write about kingsolver’s use of honeysuckle in the novel, paraphrasing the passage specified below and comparing what the book says about the paper and information from an outside source from the Internet. Paraphrase or summarize the material in chapter 2 of the novel concerning honeysuckle and the family dispute over it. Also cover the honeysuckle material in lads 359-360. Document all information with suitable signal phrases, source citations and works cited list.

Page 7 & 8-
In the book prodigal summer by Barbara Kingsolver, explain the author’s handling of chestnut wood and chestnut trees. You are to present all material by paraphrasing or summarizing; there must be no direct quotation. for this topic, wood in buildings and remnants in the forest are relevant as well as the seedlings and some surviving mature trees. Also consult outside sources for real-world information. Include coverage of the chestnut material on pages 434-435. Note the unusual amount of setting detail concerning chestnut trees and wood.

Page 9, 10, & 11-
In the book prodigal summer by Barbara Kingsolver, Explainthe use of animals in the setting. The main part should be about coyotes.you must present conflicting ideas about coyotes in the novel (from Deana, Eddie, and Lusa). find recent internet material on the coyote research projects in West Virgina. Other animals should also be covered. Your are to explain Kingsolver’s coverage of moths and butterflies in the novel. Write one page and cover moths as perceived from both lusa and deanna. cover the moths and butterflies from the book and document where the material is, consult suitable outside sources, compare the information, and document your outside sources. Explain Kingsolver’s presentation on the importance of keystone predators. (start by looking at page 62.) Find and explain an example in the novel of trouble in the ecosystem from lack of the whole food chain being present. Document this and then find an outside source on the topic. Explain Kingsolver’s handling of the topic of chemical versus organic methods of protecting growing plants from insects. The material the must be covered is on pages 273-274. after you have summarized this and documented it, you can search fore Volterra principal, and you should find scientific articles about it by accurately explaining what Kingsolver did in the novel and how it relates to what scientist say about Volterra Principal. Opening and conclusion paragraphs- write an opening paragraph and concluding paragraph for the completed research. In the opening, remember to identify the author, title, and need to give an over view of the nature and importance of the setting in the novel and add that the setting is related to advocacy of allowing predators and minimizing use of chemicals. for the concluding paragraph sum up the previous pages. Coyotes should be the main point in this section.

Page 12-
For a conclusion, sum up all the points made through out each page and in the thesis that was made in the opening paragraph.
