You must respond to at least 2 of the following questions in separate threads. Consider these questions with the information in your textbooks in mind, but feel free to use other sources as needed to add to the conversation.
you must support your assertions with at least 5 citations in current Turabian format from at least 2 different sources.
1.Explain the difference between “reader response” and “authorial intent.” Why is the issue of communication important to the discussion of authorial intent? Who controls the meaning in interpretation: the reader or the author? Why is this important? Offer a 1-sentence definition of the following terms: literary meaning, allegory, and typology. What is the major difference between an allegory and a typology? Should Christians today employ these techniques? Give reasons for your answer.
2.Describe the difference between “meaning” and “application.” List the basic steps to apply the meaning or principle of a text. What are some mistakes to avoid? Using 1 Timothy 6:10a, take this verse through the basic steps to find the basic principle and to apply the meaning (see p. 224, assignment 13–3 of Grasping God’s Word for more information). What will the application look like for Christians today? What specific steps can a Christian take to show that they understand the truth of this verse?
3.Assignment 12–1 from Grasping God’s Word: Imagine that there was a man with 2 PhDs in New Testament studies from prestigious universities. His academic credentials were impeccable and he constantly devoted himself to the study of the New Testament. The Gospels were his specialty. He did not, however, claim to follow Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The professor’s wife was a mature believer with an MA in biblical studies. They had a 9-year-old daughter who just returned from a Christian camp, where she made a decision to give her life to Christ. In light of what you have learned about the role of the Holy Spirit in interpretation, describe how each member of the family might approach and understand John 3:16. Write at least 1 paragraph from the perspective of each family member. How would you describe to a brand new believer what the role of the Holy Spirit should be in the interpretation of Scripture?
4.What are the 2 interpretative questions one should ask when reading a Gospel? Read Mark 5:21–43. It is 2 stories—the first about Jairus and his stepdaughter, the second about a bleeding woman. Note that the second story interrupts the first; that is, the bleeding woman story is presented right in the middle of the Jairus episode. Look at the 2 stories and list as many direct comparisons and contrasts between the 2 as you can find. Apply the 2 interpretative questions to these stories. What kind of application can you make from this passage for Christians today?
