COURSEWORK :

The coursework is a longer piece (2500 words) which will involve applying content analysis to news webpages. You will use this method to produce an analysis of how news webpages represent a particular news story.

After lecture 6 please choose a news topic of interest from this year, 2012/3. (You will need to have done this BEFORE lecture 8) and collect a sample of online news stories on it.

In your assignment you should:

1. Describe content analysis as well as the special issues that need to be addressed when analysing online news (use your readings).

2. Conduct a content analysis (lectures 6-9 will be useful for this, lecture 9 involves practical hands on exercise for analysing the webpage of your choice—you should bring it to this class).

3. Discuss your findings and the strengths and weaknesses of the method.

Remember to support the claims that you make about the methods and about the websites using relevant literature.
