177The fence posts are to be equally spaced in a straight line. To determine the number of posts some conflicting requirements must be satisfied.
Too many posts will cost too much for painting and termite treatment but too few will reduce the strength and effectiveness of the fence. In any case
the minimum legal post spacing is 4m and maximum is 10m. Posts cost $20 each. The cost for boring each posthole is $10. Each post requires treatment for termites which cost $5 per post.
Although the land is reasonably flat (so that fencing is not too difficult) there are several rocky outcrops along the planned fenceline. For each fencepost placed in one of tese there is
a cost of $50 per metre of outcrop for blasting. Measured from the baseline we have the outcrops shown in figure 2. Measurement are in metres along the planned fenceline from
the baseline boundary. Develop an Excel model to determine the ideal post spacing so as to minimize total cost of erecting the posts within the legal limits for fencepost sapcing
and find the corresponding number of posts.
