    12 Stages of the Hero’s Journey in The Karate Kid

     

    Stage 1

    Daniel moves to California (new home).  Daniel struggles to fit in at his new school.

     

    Stage 2

    Mr. Miyagi suggests that Daniel face Johnny in the karate tournament.

     

    Stage 3

    Daniel expresses concern about his ability to compete against Johnny in the tournament.

     

    Stage 4

    Daniel trains with Mr. Miyagi in preparation for the tournament.

     

    Stage 5

    Mr. Miyagi gives Daniel several gifts that indicate he is ready to fight Johnny.

     

    Stage 6

    Daniel has to win Ali back.

     

    Stage 7

    Daniel’s arcade date with Ali and the morning of the karate tournament.

     

    Stage 8

    Daniel must defeat several opponents before he can face Johnny in a match, but he is deliberately injured by the Cobra Kai and faces elimination from the tournament.

     

    Stage 9

    Mr. Miyagi heals Daniel after he helps Daniel understand that he has already conquered his fears and proven himself.

     

    Stage 10

    Daniel heads back to the tournament.

     

    Stage 11

    Daniel faces Johnny in a match and defeats him.

     

    Stage 12

    Daniel earns the trophy and Johnny’s respect.

     

     

     

     

    12 Stages of the Hero’s Journey in The Wizard of Oz

     

    Stage 1

    Dorothy is in Kansas; she runs away from home to avoid Ms. Gulch.

     

    Stage 2

    The tornado whisks Dorothy away to the magical world of Oz.

     

    Stage 3

    She doesn’t seem to refuse the call to adventure (the adventure being her need to find a way back to Kansas).

     

    Stage 4

    Glinda the Good Witch gives the ruby slippers to Dorothy and advises her to travel to the Wizard of Oz.

     

    Stage 5

    Dorothy skips down the Yellow Brick Road and leaves Munchkinland.

     

    Stage 6

    The fork in the road (Scarecrow); the apple trees and the witch (Tin Man); the Cowardly Lion; poppies; trying to see the wizard; the haunted forest

     

    Stage 7

    Dorothy is kidnapped by Flying Monkeys; her allies plan her rescue.

     

    Stage 8

    Dorothy faces the Wicked Witch of the West and kills her.

     

    Stage 9

    Dorothy obtains the witch’s broomstick, as required by the Wizard.

     

    Stage 10

    Dorothy travels back to the Wizard and shows him the the broomstick.

     

    Stage 11

    Glinda reveals to Dorothy that she had the power within her the entire time to return to Kansas; she just needed to learn that for herself.

     

    Stage 12

    Dorothy “returns” to Kansas.  She realizes that “there’s no place like home.”
